Separation Anxiety

I can’t leave my dog at home alone!

Are you afraid of what you might come home to? ripped up cushions, doors scratched to pieces, pee and poo on the floor, complaints from neighbours about howling and barking or even an emergency run to the vet because your dog has hurt herself whilst you were out.

Separation anxiety is heart breaking and stressful for both owners and dogs. Replacing broken furniture is expensive and constantly worrying about what you are going to find when you come home is distressing.

Unfortunately many dogs suffer from this disorder in varying ways – some rip things to bits, injure themselves in attempts to escape, whilst others may just whine and pace. Whichever it is, your dog is not being spiteful or angry, she is terrified and panicking and this is her way of trying to cope with being alone.

Luckily separation anxiety is very treatable. It takes time and patience but treatment is simple. You get your peace of mind back and your dog learns to cope or even enjoy being home alone.

What Is Separation Anxiety and why does it happen?

Separation anxiety is not something a dog chooses to do. She can’t help herself - she isn’t being naughty or spiteful – she is frightened and panicking – she barks and howls to try and make contact with you; scratches the door to try and escape to find you; injures herself through fear and frustration; pees and poos because she is frightened.

Separation anxiety can be triggered in many ways – rehoming, moving, losing a family member, illness or suffering a traumatic event when alone. Some dogs are more prone to separation anxiety than others due to temperament, personality and genetics.

Sadly, separation anxiety does not resolve on its own. Left untreated it often gets worse and getting a second dog rarely makes things better. The good news is that it can often be significantly reduced or even eliminated through training and behaviour modification. The process is not quick but it is well worth the time, cost and effort to make both your life and that of your dog so much better.

  • You receive a comprehensive written programme detailing why your dog behaves like she does and what we can do about it including written handouts of all appropriate training protocols
  • Through an on line diary system I will provide you with DAILY instructions on what to do next. I will also monitor your progress and advise accordingly
  • Once a week we will run a live, video link so that I can see your training first hand
  • Over and above this I will be available through email, phone and video conferencing to support you throughout the process

We will work together for 8 weeks or longer if needed. Every dog is an individual as is every owner so every programme is devised on a bespoke individual basis.
