Separation Anxiety - Success Stories

Emmi's Story

Back in August 2019 we thought we’d made a mistake in getting our Labrador/Spaniel cross. At 8 months old we thought that it should be possible to go out and leave Emmi for an hour or so. No, from the moment we left she was distressed and began to bark. We bought a camera to watch but, on each occasion, we left the house with her barking and she didn’t stop, getting more and more distressed each time. We spoke to our Vet who said we shouldn’t let it get any more out of hand and recommended Ingrid.

Ingrid works using Zoom and so she watched us over the internet for a diagnostic session to see if she could help. She confirmed what we feared: that Emmi had separation anxiety. Ingrid set out a de-sensitising programme for us to follow for a week and then we checked in for a consultation session and Ingrid assessed our progress, giving us a new programme for the week to come.

At the beginning, it meant that we weren’t even leaving Emmi alone, but just going through the motions of getting ready to go out and gradually, Emmi began to relax when we were doing that. It slowly built up (Ingrid explained we had to move at Emmi’s pace, not ours!) to opening and closing the front door, and after a while, we actually left the house for a second and came back! Some weeks Emmi was great and sometimes she regressed but we soon learned that was all part of the process.

It took longer than we’d hoped (Emmi’s progress was slower than many other dogs), but it was worth it and Ingrid was great at reassuring and encouraging us when we got discouraged. Now we can leave Emmi settled either in her bed or flat out on her favourite settee for a good couple of hours. What a change!

Ingrid gave us confidence that it would work and supported us through the low weeks always being available when needed.

I really thought this would never happen and its true that it took time and hard work but Ingrid’s enthusiasm, support and expertise kept us going. It was like having my own personal trainer! She was with us every step of the way until finally our little Alfie can be left at home and our new sofa is safe from being ripped to shreds.
