Separation Anxiety - Success Stories

Spud's Jouney - Anxiety to Relaxation

When we first contacted Ingrid, we had been trying to work around our dog’s separation anxiety for years which cost us a fortune in day care, and a lot of stress finding friends and family to constantly help us out.

After a change in circumstances and several unfortunate incidents with other dogs, our boy had additionally developed anxiety issues in public, so taking him to social events with us had become less of an option. We were struggling to do the right thing by him as he would be stressed when left at home on his own and stressed when out and about with us. Help was desperately needed!

On the initial assessment with Ingrid, Spud showed signs of anxiety before we had even left the house – yawning, lip licking and following us around watching our every move. Unusually for a lot of separation anxiety cases, Spud’s symptoms were extremely subtle, so it was only thanks to Ingrid’s close observation that we were able to spot and address this correctly. When we left the house, he was overly attentive and wouldn’t settle, anticipating our return. After only a short while he was howling and distressed. He clearly couldn’t cope on his own.

Spud’s Initial Assessment from Ingrid Haskal.

Ingrid was super reassuring, efficient and dedicated to teaching Spud to cope. Through sessions 5 times a week, we set to work de-sensitising Spud to the key indicators which were making him anxious before we’d even left the house. When we began following Ingrid’s protocol, we quickly realised what we’d let ourselves in for! Dedication is required and Ingrid expects you to put the work in, but we found that feeling supported by and answerable to her, this was absolutely invaluable as it can be really, really hard to stay motivated and stick to the plan 5 days a week for as long as it takes. Progress seemed slow at the time, but looking back, it didn’t take long for Spud’s reactions to our movements to change and eventually we began building his time alone in the house, at first from just a few seconds at a time.

After a couple of months of increasing Spud’s tolerance, Ingrid noticed that progress had plateaued and in his own way, Spud was trying to tell us he was struggling to cope. With a combination of behavioural medication and further tailoring Spud’s programme to address his needs, it wasn’t long before we were back to moving forwards and making rapid progress – though we might have struggled to realise our progress at the time without the constant reassurance from our expert guide.

The more effort we put in, the more it paid off both in Spud’s confidence and what we got back from Ingrid. We went through highs and lows over 8 months, as well as very stressful times trying to stick to the promise that we wouldn’t leave Spud alone at all during the programme – but Ingrid was understanding, encouraging and showed concern all the way through. She genuinely wanted to help us and went out of her way to do so, she motivated us constantly, and she gave us a kick up the bum whenever we were disheartened!

We went from not being able to leave our Spud for a single second, to ending on over 4 hours of him happily snoozing away just 8 months later and we’re still building up on time having stopped working with Ingrid!

There’s no really easy time to take on a commitment like this for your dog. It has meant that we’ve had to miss out on some of our social life and there have been many people who have told us we’re mad to have practically dedicated our weeks for over a half a year to our pooch but now that we’re on the other side of it, as cliché as it sounds, we really feel like we’ve got our lives and freedom back with guilt-free, dog-free trips to the pub or out for dinner – a new luxury! I genuinely recommend going for it and trusting in this programme.

I really thought this would never happen and its true that it took time and hard work but Ingrid’s enthusiasm, support and expertise kept us going. It was like having my own personal trainer!
